TIC Launch 'Benchmark' Tyre Safety Check for Retailers
Published 16th January 2003
The initiative is designed to provide tyre retailers in the UK with an 'approved' safety check for motorists backed by the TIC and supported by Mitutoyo Automotive Technology with high quality promotional material and precision measuring equipment.
The five-point check will encourage 'best-practice' and it is hoped that it will quickly become the 'benchmark' for the retail tyre industry. The checks include tread depth, pressure, alignment and general condition (see attached).
Mitutoyo measuring equipment has become the industry standard and is used in the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) approved tyre check kits to be supplied to UK police forces. Mitutoyo equipment is also accepted for use at MOT stations. It is anticipated that Mitutoyo digital tread depth and pressure gauges would be used by tyre retailers to implement the five-point check.
The Tyre Industry Council will actively promote the free five-point check to motorists at the time of the police roadside tyre check campaigns although it is expected that the procedure will be offered to motorists by retailers throughout the year. The TIC is currently seeking ACPO support for the tyre safety check.
Promotional material will also be produced by Mitutoyo Automotive Technology in the form of a full colour poster and check form for in-depot reference and to pass to motorists with full details of the state of their tyres. The TIC/Mitutoyo five-point tyre safety check will be exclusively available to TIC Associate members in the UK.
