Holidaymakers preparing their caravans for long journeys this summer can achieve peace of mind by conducting a brief tyre safety check before leaving home. Tyres are the only component of a caravan to come into contact with the road, so are vital to its stability and safety.

Before setting off on a long journey, TyreSafe is advising motorists to check tyre pressure and tread depth, as well as the general condition of all tyres, including the spare tyre. TyreSafe has compiled an easy-to-follow three-step process for checking tyre safety, ACT.

The prestigious TyreSafe outstanding achievement award has this year been presented to National Tyres and Autocare for the company’s outstanding contribution to the work of TyreSafe since its formation at the start of 2007. It was presented to NTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Tony Neill, by Rob Beddis, Chairman of TyreSafe at the National Tyre Distributors Association Dinner in Birmingham earlier this month.

Defective or badly worn tyres could be the Achilles’ heel of companies and could result in prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which came into force at the beginning of April. The legislation stipulates that employers have a Duty of Care to ensure the safety of employees driving for work, which means that businesses will be responsible for the maintenance of not only their own fleet, but also those of the ‘grey fleet,’ the thousands of private vehicles being used every day by employees to travel whilst on company business. It will be necessary for companies to show an audit trail indicating that regular vehicle condition checks have been carried out and documented.
