Motorists in Scotland will have additional opportunities to obtain free tyre safety information in the run up to next week's Tyre Safety Week. In addition to the tyre safety clinic to be held at the Fort Shopping Centre outside Glasgow, on Friday and Saturday of this week, the road safety team at Lothian and Borders Police will be staging a tyre safety clinic at Fort Kinneard in Edinburgh.

Other tyre and road safety clinics are to be arranged by Edinburgh City Council and Lothian and Borders Police Road Safety Team at Motorworld in Motherwell. Full details of these additional road safety initiatives will be announced in the local press.

Scottish Tyre Safety Week is one of the most successful and popular road safety initiatives to be held in Scotland and is now in its 16th year. The event is designed to raise the awareness of the importance of the dangers of driving with defective or badly worn tyres and is organised by the Tyre Industry Council with support from the Association of Chief Police Officers, Glasgow City Council Road Safety Team, Scottish Road Safety Council and St. Andrews Ambulance plus all major tyre companies and tyre retailers in Scotland. During tyre safety week the police will be checking tyres on vehicles throughout Scotland, motorists found with a defective tyre could face a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points on their licence.
