Tyre safety tips from the Tyre Industry Council

In advance of this year's Scottish Tyre Safety Week in November the Tyre Industry Council - Britain's foremost tyre safety organisation - has issued a series of simple tyre safety tips designed to keep a car legal and get the maximum performance and mileage out of a set of tyres.

Tyres are the only contact a car has with the road surface and through four patches of rubber, individually no bigger than the palm of a hand, acceleration, braking and steering are transmitted to the road. It is therefore vitally important that tyres are keep in good condition, the following simple five point weekly tyre check is designed to do that.

  1. Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls
  2. Check tyre tread depths. The legal minimum is 1.6mm
  3. Check tyre pressures
  4. Check signs of irregular wear ie mis-alignment
  5. Check and examine the spare wheel/tyre

This year's tyre safety week, an integral part of the Scottish Winter Safety Campaign, will be held during the week 6th to the 10th November. On the 3rd and 4th November motorists can obtain free tyre safety checks and advice at the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. The Tyre Industry Council will be joined by Strathclyde Police, Road Safety Scotland, Glasgow City Council and St Andrew's Ambulance offering helpful road safety tips and advice.
