It’s not simply through enforcement that the Police can help to promote tyre safety, education is just as important.
Why did Chichester Neighbourhood Policing Team get involved?
Although Chichester Neighbourhood Policing Team has an obligation regarding tyre legislation the force wanted to adopt a proactive stance by educating and informing drivers about the importance of tyre safety rather than simply through enforcement.
What did Chichester Neighbourhood Policing Team do?
Officers from Chichester Neighbourhood Policing Team spent three days at supermarkets in the local area carrying out a range of activities. These included promoting the 20p test, offering information on tyre safety to drivers, conducting tyre safety checks and providing advice to those whose tyre’s failed to meet legal and safe standards.
During the three days, a total of 270 vehicles were checked. Out of these 42 (15 percent) were found to have tyres that that failed to meet the minimum required tread depth of 1.6mm.
