Forecourt airlines no lifeline due to poor condition

19thFeb08Drawing up at a petrol forecourt to find that the tyre pressure airline is either faulty or inoperative, seems to be all too commonplace. According to a recent poll conducted by TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation, a staggering 60% of motorists were unable to check their tyre pressures due to airline equipment being out of order, which presents a concerning picture of the sub-standard condition of the services available to motorists at the nation’s petrol forecourts.

This echoes the worrying results revealed in a study by the automotive weekly publication, Auto Express, which found that 40% of airlines were faulty or inoperative showing that little effort is being made to improve the safety of the millions of drivers on the road. Almost three quarters of all cars on the country’s roads have tyres that are under-inflated, and there is little hope of any improvement if drivers do not have access to operational equipment.

With petrol prices steadily increasing beyond the £1 per litre level, incorrect tyre pressures are costing motorists thousands of pounds every year in wasted fuel whilst also increasing the level of carbon emissions, and putting many lives at risk.

TyreSafe advises all petrol forecourt owners to regularly check the condition of their tyre pressure airline equipment and to report any faults immediately. It is their responsibility to ensure the highest possible levels of safety for drivers.
