As October’s tyre safety month fast approaches, road safety professionals are being invited to register now to receive free campaign materials that can help them run local activities and initiatives.
The campaign, which is being organised by TyreSafe, will be encouraging drivers to check their tyre pressures at least once a month, a simple maintenance job which can not only significantly improve road safety, but also help drivers make their tyres last longer, reduce their fuel bills and cut their carbon emissions.
“Making sure your tyres are properly inflated is an incredibly quick and easy job, but sadly one which many drivers fail to do regularly,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “For tyre safety month, we’re calling on as many road safety professionals to join the campaign as possible and help raise awareness about the importance of making sure tyres are properly inflated.”
Results from a recent pan-European vehicle survey by one TyreSafe member involving some 27,000 cars underlined the scale of the problem as it found that 78 percent of cars were being driven on under-inflated tyres. Perhaps more alarming was the fact that more than a quarter of the sample (28.4 percent) had tyres that were either seriously or severely underinflated, greatly reducing their safety on the road.
To help road safety professionals support tyre safety month and promote the importance of checking tyre pressures, TyreSafe has launched a dedicated campaign website. Supporters can either register on the site to have campaign materials, such as leaflets and posters sent to them, or they can download them straight to their desktop.
There’s also a number of case studies from a diverse range of organisations including NFU Mutual and Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, explaining how they’ve got involved in previous tyre safety month campaigns, and a series of ‘how to’ guides providing ideas and advice on how to hold a local campaign.
Digital resources are also well catered for with a series on online banners for supporters to place on their own websites along with a new educational animation, the latest offering from TyreSafe’s ambassador Mr McIntyre, and even a campaign music video featuring members of the trade.
“We’ve worked hard to get our tyre safety month campaign materials ready earlier than ever before so that our supporters have the best opportunity to plan and integrate their own events and activities,” continues Jackson. “We’re very proud of what we’ve delivered and I’d encourage as many organisations to get on board as possible and help us make a big difference to improving safety on the UK’s roads.”
