Why did Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership get involved?

Over a three year period, 95 collisions were recorded on Bedfordshire’s roads where a ‘vehicle defect’ was found to be a contributory factor in the cause of the accident prompting the need for a targeted, local campaign.

What did Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership do?

Working with national businesses, Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership (BLCRP) organised free tyre safety checks across the county. Police stop checks were also carried out to check vehicles tyres. Over 500 radio adverts were broadcast throughout October across local radio stations as well as an engaging social media campaign to highlight TyreSafe and tyre safety month.

The result

BLCRP checked over 145 vehicles at its events, where nearly a quarter of vehicles had at least one damaged tyre, over 30 per cent had incorrect pressures and over five percent illegal tread depth. Safety advice was offered to drivers and in some cases tyres were changed immediately. The police stop checks led to five vehicles being seized. In total, the team spoke to 293 drivers face to face and the various supporting marketing activities reached more than 300,000 local people.
