The Challenge Farmers Face
Mid-summer is the busiest time for machinery preparation. Soon, trailers that haven’t moved since last autumn will be back in service, carrying loads of up to 14 tonnes on public highways.
Once harvest begins, every hour counts. Downtime isn’t just inconvenient—it’s expensive. A tyre failure at 3am in the middle of harvest can derail operations, delay vital work, and put safety at risk.
While combines and tractors often receive careful servicing, trailers and secondary equipment don’t always get the same attention. That makes pre-season tyre checks essential.
Don’t Let Tyres Be the Weak Link
Tyres carry immense loads at speeds close to HGVs, often on rough ground and sometimes with little more than a quick glance before use. Worn, underinflated, overloaded, or damaged tyres can fail without warning—causing costly delays, breakdowns, and accidents.
That’s why TyreSafe has developed The Farmer’s Five: your essential tyre care tips designed to be simple, memorable, and effective.

The Farmer’s Five – Your Essential Tyre Care Tips
- Pressure – The Foundation of Performance
Correct inflation protects soil, saves fuel, improves grip, and extends tyre life. - Type – Right Tyre, Right Job
Match tyres and tread to your task—whether for heavy loads, wet fields, or turf protection. - Weight – Don’t Overburden Your Best Assets
Overloading increases failure risk. Respect load ratings and balance ballast carefully. - Inspection – Catch Issues Early
Look for cracks, bulges, stubble damage, and rim corrosion—especially on kit dragged out of storage. - Storage – Protect Your Investment Off-Season
Store machinery in cool, dry conditions. Take weight off tyres or increase pressures slightly during long idle periods.
💡 Make these five checks part of your harvest routine. A few minutes now could save hours later.

Roadworthiness Matters
Modern tractors and trailers can travel nearly as fast as articulated trucks. That means agricultural vehicles on public highways must meet the same roadworthiness standards, even if enforcement feels less visible.
- You are legally responsible for ensuring tyres (and the vehicle) are safe.
- Tyres must never exceed their speed or load rating.
- Illegal or defective tyres risk fines, insurance problems, and, most importantly, serious injury.
Chair’s Statement
Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, says:
“A major tyre defect on heavy farm machinery isn’t just a breakdown risk—it’s a threat to safety and livelihoods. Taking five minutes to check tyre pressures and condition could prevent hours or even days of lost productivity and potential harm.”
A Simple Reminder: ACT
For all vehicles – farm or road – remember TyreSafe’s ACT principle:
- Air Pressure – check monthly and before long hauls.
- Condition – look for damage, cracks, bulges.
- Tread – check depth and replace when worn.
Support That Works as Hard as You Do
