Unlike most large insurers, it has no shareholders and is instead owned by its policyholders, a structure that allows it to reinvest profits back into the business and provide a “Mutual Bonus” discount to its members upon renewal. While it has deep historical roots in the agricultural sector and continues to cover over two-thirds of the agricultural land in England and Wales, it has expanded to serve over 900,000 customers across both rural and urban communities.
The company offers a comprehensive range of products, including home, motor, pet, and business insurance, alongside financial planning services like pensions and investments. It is particularly well-regarded for its customer service and local presence, operating through a network of over 280 agency offices nationwide. Because they prioritise a personal approach, they generally do not sell policies through price comparison websites or offer full online purchasing, preferring instead to provide tailored advice through their local agents or over the phone.
