Operation Spotlight – West Mercia
In April 2026, TyreSafe joined West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at the Nesscliffe Vehicle Checkpoint for a high-impact multi-agency enforcement operation.
Operation Spotlight was designed to gather real-world data on vehicle maintenance while providing a platform for driver education. By conducting roadside inspections, the operation aimed to inform future road safety activities and empower drivers with the knowledge to maintain legal and safe tyres.
The results paint a stark picture of the risks currently present on UK roads, moving beyond maintenance issues into serious criminal activity and dangerous vehicle conditions.
The Fleet Profile
The operation inspected 30 vehicles, including a diverse mix of cars, light commercial vehicles (vans), HGVs, and agricultural machinery (tractors and trailers).
TyreSafe’s technical team, supported by Translogik and TreadTracker, carried out 120 individual wheel inspections to assess the “state of the nation’s” tyre health.
Key Findings: Tyre Safety
TyreSafe’s technical data revealed a significant “Safety Gap” among the vehicles stopped. 26% of all vehicles inspected were found to have tyre-related issues.
-
Critical Defects (85% of issues): Included tyres with cords exposed (high risk of explosive failure), illegal tread depth, and active punctures.
-
Advisories (15% of issues): Observations for tyres nearing the legal limit, requiring imminent replacement.
Wider Enforcement: The Police Results
The wider results from West Mercia Police and the DVSA highlight that vehicle defects are often symptomatic of broader non-compliance and criminal behaviour.
Penalties & Seizures
The operation resulted in a high volume of immediate enforcement actions:
-
9 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs): Issued for a range of offences including No MOT, tyre defects, overweight vehicles, insecure loads, mobile phone use, and dangerous conditions.
-
3 Insurance Seizures: Vehicles removed from the road immediately under Section 165 for lack of valid insurance.
-
Prohibitions: 2 Police PG9 (Prohibition) notices were issued, alongside further immediate prohibitions and prosecutions from the DVSA.
Serious Crime & Road Risk
Beyond vehicle maintenance, the operation successfully removed high-harm individuals from the road:
-
1 Arrest: For Theft and going equipped to steal.
-
1 Drug Driving Arrest: A driver arrested under Section 5a of the Road Traffic Act.
The TyreSafe Perspective
This operation perfectly illustrates the “Safe System” in action. By targeting vehicle defects (a key element of safe vehicles), authorities are not only preventing incidents caused by mechanical failure but are also identifying the “high-risk” road users who compromise the safety of everyone else.
