Sussex Police’s Road Safety Team has partnered with TyreSafe, the UK’s tyre safety charity, to launch a flagship digital resource giving officers instant access to vital tyre safety information at the roadside.
Developed as a pilot project in Sussex, the new tool is designed to help officers carry out consistent tyre checks and engage more effectively with drivers about the dangers of illegal or poorly maintained tyres. The resource is available directly on handheld digital devices, providing clear guidance on what to look out for across a wide range of vehicle types – including powered two wheelers, cars, HGVs, LCVs and towed vehicles.
The digital resource also includes information on part-worn tyres, frequently asked questions, and practical advice to help officers educate drivers about tyre safety. Following the pilot, the project has the potential to be rolled out across all UK police forces.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said, “This partnership with Sussex Police is a landmark moment for tyre safety enforcement and education. By putting reliable, accessible tyre safety guidance directly into the hands of frontline officers, we can ensure safer vehicles on our roads and help prevent avoidable collisions and breakdowns. Sussex is leading the way, and we hope this model will soon be adopted nationally.”
Superintendent Jo Grantham, Head of Roads Policing, Sussex Police, added, “Our officers are committed to keeping road users safe, and having instant access to this tyre safety resource makes a real difference on the ground. It supports enforcement while also giving us the tools to educate drivers more effectively. We’re proud to be working with TyreSafe on this project and to be the first police force in the country to pilot it.”
The launch of this resource underlines Sussex Police’s commitment to innovation in road safety and highlights the vital role that tyres play in keeping all road users safe.
