TyreSafe, the UK’s road safety charity dedicated to tyre safety, has announced a new partnership with Sheffield City Council to strengthen tyre safety awareness among motorists across the city, including the city’s large population of students and newly qualified drivers.
Sheffield’s busy urban road network supports more than 1.7 billion vehicle miles each year, with the majority of journeys being short, everyday trips that place increased demands on tyres. Sheffield has a substantial and diverse vehicle parc, with many road users reliant on older or shared vehicles—making routine tyre checks especially important.
Through the partnership, TyreSafe will work alongside Sheffield City Council to promote simple, preventative tyre checks covering air pressure, tread depth and overall condition. The aim is to help road users understand the critical role tyres play in vehicle safety and to support the Council’s wider efforts to reduce road risk and improve safety outcomes for all road users.
Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said, “In a city like Sheffield, where traffic density is high and journeys are frequent, making sure tyres are properly maintained is essential. By partnering with Sheffield City Council, we can reinforce these vital safety messages and encourage road users to make tyre checks part of their regular routine.”
The partnership will embed tyre safety messaging into a range of local road safety and engagement activity, supporting Sheffield City Council’s ongoing work to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the city’s roads.
Cllr Alexi Dimond, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Tyre safety is a fundamental part of road safety, but it’s something many road users—particularly those newer to driving and riding—don’t always remember to check. I’m pleased to announce this new partnership with TyreSafe which will help ensure that practical tyre safety advice reaches road users at all stages. This scheme will give them the knowledge and confidence to keep vehicles safe and roadworthy in all weather conditions. Tyre safety can help reduce collisions and contribute to Vision Zero: our ambition to have no fatalities on Sheffield’s roads.”
With one of the largest student populations in the UK and high numbers of learner and newly qualified drivers and riders, Sheffield is well placed to benefit from tyre safety education that helps motorists build good vehicle maintenance habits early and maintain them throughout their lives on the road.
