While much attention rightly focuses on driver behaviour and vehicle safety features, a crucial, often overlooked element of road safety lies beneath our wheel – the road surface itself. When combined with properly maintained tyres, advanced road surfacing technologies, particularly high-friction surfacing, play an indispensable role in preventing incidents and saving lives.
This symbiotic relationship between road surface and tyre is fundamental to the Safe System approach to road safety, specifically aligning with the “Safe Roads & Roadsides” pillar, with a strong emphasis on design and engineering.


The Critical Connection – Road Surface Quality and Tyre Performance
Imagine trying to stop on ice. Now imagine stopping on a perfectly dry, grippy tarmac. The difference in stopping power highlights the profound impact of the road surface. Tyres, no matter how advanced, can only perform as well as the surface they are in contact with. A well-designed and maintained road surface provides the necessary grip for tyres to function optimally, translating directly into safer driving.
Poor road surfaces – those with inadequate texture, compromised drainage, or excessive wear – can significantly reduce tyre grip, leading to longer braking distances, reduced control during cornering, and an increased risk of skidding, especially in wet conditions.
Road surface texture can be restored using retexturing using water or shot blasting. Positive texture can also be restored by applying a surface dressing, microsurfacing or specialist high friction surfacing.

The Power of High-Friction Surfacing – Engineering for Grip
This is where high-friction surfacing materials come to the forefront. These aren’t just any old tarmac; they are engineered solutions designed to maximise the interface between the tyre and the road. Typically applied at high-risk locations such as approaches to junctions, pedestrian crossings, sharp bends, and incident blackspots, high-friction surfacing provides significantly enhanced skid resistance.
How does it work? These systems usually consist of a hard-wearing aggregate (often calcined bauxite, known for its exceptional toughness and angularity) embedded in a durable resin binder or pre-mixed in a hot thermoplastic screed. The angular nature of the aggregate creates a highly textured surface that “digs in” to the tyre tread, providing superior grip and friction. This dramatically improves;
- Braking Performance – Shorter stopping distances, giving drivers crucial extra milliseconds to react and avoid collisions.
- Cornering Stability – Increased lateral grip, allowing vehicles to maintain control and trajectory through bends, even at higher speeds or in adverse weather.
- Traction in Wet Conditions – By providing numerous drainage channels and sharp aggregate edges, high-friction surfaces effectively disperse water, reducing the risk of aquaplaning and maintaining critical tyre contact with the road.

They work closely with highway authorities, contractors, and research bodies to ensure the highest standards of material quality, application, and performance. Their aim is to continually push the boundaries of road surfacing technology to deliver ever-safer roads for all users.

While high-friction surfaces provide exceptional grip, their effectiveness is amplified exponentially by well-maintained tyres. A tyre with adequate tread depth, correct inflation pressure, and no damage can fully exploit the enhanced friction offered by these advanced road surfaces. Conversely, worn or under-inflated tyres will significantly compromise even the best road surface’s ability to provide grip.
Therefore, for the ultimate in road safety, it’s a dual responsibility – road engineers and providers, must ensure their surfaces offer maximum grip, and drivers, must ensure their tyres are always in optimal condition to harness that grip.
