Foreword

Stuart Lovatt, Chair, TyreSafe

*”Each October, TyreSafe leads the UK’s largest tyre safety awareness campaign, Tyre Safety Month. In 2025, our theme Under Pressure responds to the growing mental and financial pressures felt across all sections of society.

We know that when life feels overwhelming, routine vehicle checks can easily be neglected – yet something as basic as ignoring underinflated tyres can lead to life-threatening consequences. With this year’s materials, we are equipping supporters representing all road user groups with targeted resources to reach every type of driver, rider or operator. Together, we can help people relieve the pressure by checking their tyres.”*

Campaign Overview

The 2025 campaign, Under Pressure, is built on new research into how stress and life pressures affect vehicle maintenance habits. The findings show that while people juggle competing demands, tyre checks are often pushed aside – increasing risks for drivers, passengers, and other road users.

Core message: Life has enough pressures. Don’t let tyres be one.
Key behaviour message: ACT: Air Pressure, Condition, Tread – TyreSafe’s proven three-step approach to reducing risk and improving road safety.

The Problem: Evidence from Research & National Data

Behavioural Insights

  • Only 46% of drivers check tyre pressures at least once a month.
  • 60% of women check less than monthly.
  • 41% of students wait for a warning light before checking.
  • 91% of women and 79% of men feel overwhelmed or stressed each month.
  • 71% say vehicle maintenance stresses them more than relationship issues.
  • 63% of Boomers feel confident checking pressures vs just 35% of Gen Z.
  • 59% have experienced at least one tyre-related issue.

Regional Highlights

  • Londoners report the most tyre issues (69%) but are also most likely to ignore warning lights due to stress.
  • Northern Ireland residents are least likely to check pressures (66% check less than monthly).
  • Full-time students are most likely to say they don’t have time to check tyres (11%).

Why This Matters

  • 75% of tyre defects in fatal collisions are due to lack of maintenance (National Highways/TRRL).
  • Over 6 million tyres on UK roads are illegal each year (TyreSafe).
  • 17% of tyres are illegal when replaced; 40% are borderline (TyreSafe/National Highways).
  • 1 in 5 motorway/A-road breakdowns is tyre-related – more than 51,500 in 2023 (National Highways).
  • The AA responded to 620,000 tyre-related incidents in 2023.
  • 21% of those who broke down on motorways believe it could have been avoided with proper checks.

Underinflated tyres waste £1 billion in fuel annually (Motor Ombudsman).
