TyreSafe, the UK’s tyre safety charity, is pleased to announce that Leeds City Council has become its newest local authority supporter, strengthening a shared commitment to promoting safer driving and raising awareness of tyre maintenance across Leeds.
The partnership follows continued efforts by Leeds City Council to improve road safety for its 825,000 residents, 470,00 people working, adding to commuter volume, and a major factor on the city’s busy road network. In addition, the city accommodates over 75,000 students across four universities, giving the partnership the opportunity to reach the vulnerable new and young driver road user group in its joint road safety efforts.
As part of Tyre Safety Month last October, Leeds City Council delivered a series of activities to encourage drivers to carry out simple, regular tyre checks:
- A joint road safety stall with National Highways at The White Rose Shopping Centre, engaging directly with drivers and families. Staff demonstrated how to check tyre tread depth and identify common tyre defects before driving.
- Citywide VMS (Variable Message Sign) displays, reminding road users to check their tyres—especially important on Leeds’ high-demand road network.
These proactive measures underline the Council’s strong commitment to reducing risks on the roads and encouraging safe driving habits.

“Vehicle maintenance is a fundamental, preventative step in reducing risk on our roads. Through our ongoing use of VMS messaging and direct community engagement, we are committed to making routine checks second nature for everyone driving in Leeds.”
