Campaign Update – April Focus on Aquaplaning Risks
TyreSafe recently delivered its ‘Drip Drip Drop – Little April Showers’ campaign, highlighting the increased risks associated with wet weather driving during the spring months.
As part of the campaign, road users were reminded that April conditions can create a “perfect storm” for aquaplaning. After dry spells, rain mixes with oil and debris on the road surface, significantly reducing grip—particularly for vehicles with worn or incorrectly inflated tyres.
The campaign reinforced several key findings:
At 70mph, worn tyres can add 27 metres to stopping distances in wet conditions
Worn tyres can have seven times more impact on stopping distance than alcohol
The majority of tyre-related defects in serious incidents are linked to poor maintenance
TyreSafe used the campaign to promote its core ACT message—encouraging drivers and riders to regularly check:
Air pressure
Condition
Tread depth
The campaign served as a timely reminder that tyre safety is not just about legality, but about maintaining performance when it matters most.
TyreSafe also supported the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s Operation Spotlight, reinforcing the importance of both protection and prevention in road safety.
While the campaign focused on seatbelt use—one of the “Fatal Four” offences—TyreSafe highlighted the critical role tyres play in preventing collisions in the first place.
Importantly, of vehicles inspected by Greater Manchester Police, 14% had tyre related defects, and even more concerningly, 26% were found to have tyre related defects in West Mercia, reinforcing the need for better tyre safety management.
Key messages included:
Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by around 50%, yet non-compliance remains an issue, particularly among younger drivers
Younger motorists were also shown to have lower levels of tyre safety awareness, with gaps in knowledge around tread depth and maintenance
Only 40% of drivers reported checking tyre pressure monthly, and 10% never check tread depth at all
TyreSafe emphasised that while seatbelts protect occupants during a collision, tyres are what help avoid the collision entirely, again reinforcing the ACT message as a simple, preventative step.
TyreSafe has recently been actively engaged in key industry and enforcement discussions aimed at reducing work-related road risk. The first meetings of the Charter for Work Related Road Risk strategy brought together stakeholders to shape a more consistent and proactive approach to managing occupational driving safety, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and shared responsibility.
In addition, TyreSafe participated in an ABI round table meeting, contributing to dialogue with insurance industry leaders on emerging risks and opportunities to improve road safety outcomes through better tyre awareness and maintenance standards.
Further reinforcing its commitment to frontline engagement, TyreSafe also exhibited at the Police College’s “What Works in Roads Policing” event, showcasing the importance of tyre safety in effective enforcement and prevention strategies.
Industry Update – Tyron Runflat Joins UKTSA
The UK Towing Safety Alliance (UKTSA) has continued to grow, with Tyron Runflat joining the coalition.
The Alliance—established to address rising towing-related incidents—brings together organisations across the leisure, agricultural and transport sectors to promote safer towing practices.
Tyron’s expertise in tyre safety and blowout protection strengthens the Alliance’s work, particularly in supporting its TLC campaign, which encourages drivers to check:
Tyres
Load
Connectivity
With data showing that nearly half of inspected non-caravan trailers were non-compliant, and towing incidents rising, collaboration across the sector remains critical to improving safety standards.
TyreSafe has announced a new partnership with Road Safety Support (RSS), further strengthening its evidence-led approach to reducing road casualties.
RSS works with police forces, safer roads partnerships and highway authorities, providing expertise in:
Collision data analysis
Enforcement strategy
Road safety communications
Legal and forensic support
This collaboration will enable TyreSafe to align its tyre safety campaigns more closely with real-world data and enforcement insight, ensuring that vehicle condition—and tyres in particular—are fully recognised within the Safe System approach.
TyreSafe has also partnered with Bradford Council to improve tyre safety awareness across the district.
With over 1.5 billion vehicle miles travelled annually on Bradford’s roads, the partnership focuses on promoting simple, preventative checks to improve vehicle safety—particularly in a busy urban environment with a high number of new and learner drivers.
Working alongside the Council’s Road Safety Team, TyreSafe will support education and engagement activity to highlight how tyre condition directly affects:
Braking performance
Grip in wet weather
Overall vehicle control
This partnership also supports the wider ambitions of West Yorkshire Vision Zero, which aims to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries.
TyreSafe continues to work with partners across the UK to deliver evidence-led campaigns, practical guidance and collaborative initiatives aimed at reducing tyre-related incidents.
