TyreSafe Calls for Urgent Action as Road Casualty Figures Remain Stagnant
TyreSafe has responded to the release of the UK government’s 2024 road casualty statistics, highlighting that overall fatal and KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) figures have remained stubbornly stagnant for over 15 years.
Of particular concern are incidents where tyres were a contributory factor. The 2024 figures show 172 tyre-related KSIs—9 higher than the 5-year average—underscoring the urgent need for stronger action on this preventable cause of accidents. Vulnerable road users are especially at risk: powered two-wheel vehicles saw 36 tyre-related KSIs in 2024, the highest in a decade, while car occupants also recorded an increase above the 5-year average.
TyreSafe continues to campaign for robust national measures, including improved enforcement, education, and the formal inclusion of tyre defects in the government’s upcoming Road Safety Strategy.
“The figures for 2022 (152), 2023 (151), and 2024 (153) clearly demonstrate that more needs to be done,” said Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair.
Young Driver Campaign | 22 September – 5 October
TyreSafe has launched a powerful campaign focused on young driver safety. Running in support of the DfT’s THINK! initiative and aligned with the NPCC’s Operation Spotlight, the campaign will highlight the importance of safe tyres for new drivers. Partners include DVSA, RED Driver Training, MSA GB, Institute of Master Tutors of Driving, and Intelligent Instructor. Expect a hard-hitting video, printable assets, and social media content designed to reach and resonate with young drivers.
Tyre Safety Month | October 2025
This year’s theme, “Under Pressure”, draws a link between everyday stress and neglect of tyre safety. Campaign packs include bespoke resources for motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles, young drivers, HGVs, and vans. Materials are now available via the TyreSafe website for members and supporters to download and schedule across October.
TyreSafe Highlights Student Safety Risk as New Data Reveals Rising Casualties Linked to Defective Tyres
Cars account for 59% of UK trips and 73% of distance travelled, with households heavily reliant on vehicles. As more than 439,000 students head to or return to university this autumn, many will be driving daily due to high living costs.
Yet tyre neglect remains a critical safety issue. In 2023, 190 people were killed or seriously injured in tyre-related incidents—a 29% rise on 2022 and the highest level since 2018. Research shows 75% of tyre defects in fatal crashes stem from basic lack of maintenance. MOT results reinforce the problem, with over 2 million tyre-related failures annually, including 1 million dangerous tyres. Alarmingly, 36% of vehicles failing for tyre defects in 2024 had already received advisories that were ignored.
TyreSafe Chair Stuart Lovatt urged drivers—particularly students—to ACT: check Air pressure, Condition, and Tread. “Driving to university can be a rite of passage, but it should never be a risk to life. Simple tyre checks take minutes and can save lives.”
Devon & Cornwall Police Join Forces with TyreSafe to Improve Road Safety
TyreSafe has welcomed Devon and Cornwall Police as its latest official supporter, with the partnership focusing on the unique risks posed by rural roads and heavy seasonal traffic in the region.
TyreSafe Chair Stuart Lovatt said the collaboration will help tackle incidents caused by illegal or poorly maintained tyres, particularly during peak holiday seasons when millions visit the area. Adrian Leisk, Head of Road Safety for Devon and Cornwall Police, highlighted that tyre condition is vital for grip and braking on rural roads and urged drivers to carry out simple checks.
This partnership adds to TyreSafe’s network of more than 220 organisations, including several UK police forces and the NPCC, all committed to reducing tyre-related incidents on the roads.
TyreSafe Partners with Cycle Sprog to Promote Bike Tyre Safety for Families
TyreSafe has joined forces with Cycle Sprog, the UK’s leading family cycling advice website, to help parents and children learn the importance of tyre checks from the very first ride. The collaboration integrates TyreSafe’s ACT message—Air pressure, Condition, and Tread—into Cycle Sprog’s advice and resources, supported by guides, social media content, and practical tools for families.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said the partnership will help children form life-long safety habits, while Cycle Sprog’s Emily Wormald emphasised that tyre care makes family cycling safer and more enjoyable. The campaign also highlights the importance of bike tyre safety as families prepare for the new school year.
TyreSafe Partners with Bath & North-East Somerset Council
TyreSafe has joined forces with Bath & North-East Somerset Council to embed tyre safety into the region’s road safety strategy. The partnership will provide local drivers, schools, businesses, and community groups with access to TyreSafe’s campaign resources, training materials, and seasonal toolkits.
By combining national expertise with local networks, the initiative aims to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal or poorly maintained tyres, encourage regular checks, and reduce avoidable collisions and breakdowns.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, highlighted the importance of empowering drivers with knowledge to stay safe, while David Boardman, Senior Road Safety Engineer, underlined the Council’s commitment to making roads safer for all users.
This collaboration is part of TyreSafe’s wider mission to work with local authorities nationwide, helping to create safer roads through practical, community-level action.
TyreSafe is delighted to welcome Tyron as its newest commercial supporter, bringing decades of expertise in helping drivers maintain control during sudden tyre deflation.
Originally developed for police and emergency vehicles, Tyron’s MultiBand system enables tyres to stay attached to the wheel during deflation, improving steering and stability. Today, the technology is used across a wide range of vehicles, from cars to commercial fleets.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said the partnership will help reach more drivers with life-saving advice on preventing and responding to tyre failure: “Sudden tyre deflation is one of the most dangerous situations a driver can face. Tyron’s knowledge and experience are a valuable addition to our collective mission.”
Peter Simson, Director at Tyron, added: “This is about giving drivers the best chance to stay safe in those critical moments. Partnering with TyreSafe reflects our shared commitment to promoting safer roads.”
Together, TyreSafe and Tyron will work to raise awareness, educate road users, and share best practice to reduce risks associated with tyre-related incidents.
